The purpose of the Battle of the Books program is to encourage reading by all students at the middle school level. Students, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors in the area of young adult literature. The game format creates interest and excitement in reading. Through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, mature in their reading skills, and acquire a broader knowledge base.
Students must read the books that can be found on the list for that year and answer questions about the books. The Battle of the Book team will consist of no more than twelve 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. If more than 12 students show interest, students will be given a title/author test to help narrow the team. Other tests can be given if necessary to narrow the number of participants to 12.
Students will participate in a county competition in March and the winner of the county competition will compete in the Region 5 competition in April. For more information including the manual and current list of books go to http://www.ncslma.org/msbob.
