Choral Music Classes
There are two different classes of Choral Music offered at FMS:
Beginner Choir: This is a beginner level for all students. Students will learn vocal techniques,
proper breathing for singing, and basic music theory. Some music history is also taught. This is
a semester long course. Students will be required to sing selected choral pieces in two concerts
(one at the end of each 9 weeks). The concerts assess students’ choral singing skills that were
taught over the course of the 9 weeks. My goal is to have them singing in three part harmony
by the end of the semester…Soprano, Alto, and Baritone.
Show Choir: This is an auditioned group that is more advanced in choral music. Students will
continue working on vocal techniques, proper breathing techniques, music theory ( learning to
read music) and developing broader vocal range. Music history is also incorporated in this
course. This is a yearlong course. Students will be required to perform in a concert each 9
weeks. They also perform for some community functions, national anthem at some of our
sporting events and our annual “Evening of The Arts” concert in the spring. I also take this
group to Carowinds in the spring for the Choral Competition. This group has also performed at
the Biltmore House for the “Singing in the Gardens” annual event.
I try to do at least one fundraiser in the fall to help with expenses……we are not funded at all by our county.
