8th grade English Language Arts is based on the Common Core, which asks students to read literature and informational texts, as well as content based texts that provide facts and draw upon background knowledge in areas such as science and social studies. Students will be challenged and asked questions that push them to refer back to what they’ve read. This stresses critical thinking, problem solving, analytical, and communication skills that are required for success in college, career, and life. Some example texts include articles from the NEWSELA website, as well as popular novels, such as Touching Spirit Bear (Mikaelsen) and The Outsiders (Hinton). Benchmark Assessments are administered at the end of the first three quarters to assess student learning and inform teaching practices. Communication skills are stressed throughout
the year and in a variety of formats. Reading is not just a habit... it is a life skill!
