The Criteria for Placement in 7th Advanced Math is located in the 2017 AIG plan on the Yadkin County Schools website. Click on the Academically Gifted Link under Departments.
7th Grade Advanced Math students will complete the 7th grade math curriculum fully and selected topics from the 8th grade curriculum.
There are 5 standards within the 7th grade curriculum: Number Systems, Expressions &
Equations, Ratios & Proportional Relationships, Statistics & Probability, and Geometry.
Instructional time will focus on four critical areas: (1) Developing an understanding of and
applying proportional relationships; (2) Developing an understanding of operations with rational
numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) Solving problems involving
scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two and three-
dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and, (4)
Drawing inferences about populations based on samples.
Advanced math students will be working with the following concepts in addition to the 7th grade
curriculum: (1) Understanding the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and
linear equations; (2) Analyzing and solving linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear
equations (using the distributive property and combining like terms); (3) Solving realworld and
mathematical problems involving the volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres; (4) Working with
radicals and integer exponents; (5) Knowing that there are numbers that are not rational, and
approximating them by rational numbers; and, (6) Understanding and applying the Pythagorean
