Criteria for Placement in Math 1 in 8th Grade?
See the AIG plan located on the Yadkin County Schools website. Go to Departments and click on Academically Gifted.
8th Grade Math 1 students will complete the 8th grade math curriculum and the Math 1
curriculum. There is a Math 1 End of Course Test (EOC) during the last ten days of the school year.
It is expected that the students will successfully complete the Math 1 EOC in addition to passing the class. If either of these
things does not occur, the student will be expected to take Math 1 again as a freshman in high school.
Math I: This course asks students to solve problems by applying algebra, geometry, probability
and statistics in a connected approach with a focus on algebraic equations and linear, quadratic
and exponential functions. Students will be expected to describe and translate graphic, algebraic,
numeric, tabular and verbal representations of relationships and use those representations to solve problems.
There are 5 standards within the 8th grade Math Curriculum: Number Systems, Expressions &
Equations, Functions, Statistics & Probability, and Geometry. Instructional time will focus on
three critical areas: (1) Formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including
modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and
systems of linear equations; (2) Grasping the concept of a function and using functions to
describe quantitative relationships; (3) Analyzing two and threedimensional space and figures
using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.
